As the CTO of CST, I had the privilege of attending the #IONOSsummit 2023 in Berlin. It was an enlightening experience, and I’d like to extend my heartfelt thanks to #IONOS and Martin Batz for hosting this exceptional event. This summit provided us with the opportunity to exchange ideas and immerse ourselves in the exciting new developments within IONOS, cloud-native solutions, and AI.

ALTERNATIVE

“ALTERNATIVE”: an experimental model to study the effects of pollutants on cardiac tissue

We at CST are thrilled to be part of the ALTERNATIVE project, which will be working towards the development of new biomedical technologies to solve problems which are currently impacting the population. We will be developing the cloud data platform which will host the data, processes and in-silico machine working model for the project.

People are continuously exposed to a huge amount and variety of potentially toxic chemicals present in the surrounding environment, such as pesticides or drugs traces in water, soil, air and living organisms. The combined action of pollutants can increase the risk of toxic effects. At the same time, a growing occurrence of cardiovascular diseases has been observed. These diseases have been among the top-ranked causes of death in mature and aged populations for the last 30 years. Scientists think that this increase may be related to the environmental exposure to exogenous toxic chemicals.
ALTERNATIVE (environmentAL Toxicity chEmical mixtuRes through aN innovative platform based on aged cardiac tissue model) project, coordinated by Prof. Gianluca Ciardelli with the Biomedical Lab team (Susanna Sartori, Monica Boffito) from DIMEAS-Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of Politecnico, will produce an innovative in vitro platform able to evaluate the cardiotoxicity of single chemicals or a mixture of chemical components. The platform is made by a tri-dimensional model of bioengineered human functional cardiac tissue cultured in a bioreactor, together with a system allowing “omic” analysis to understand the response of the model to different substances. Artificial Intelligence algorithms will be implemented to estimate the risk. Additionally, the project will develop a model of aged cardiac tissue to evaluate the impact of toxics on the fragile population.
The model will be initially validated on existing toxicity data and after it will be used to make predictions on chemical and pharmaceutical substances. This project aims at finding impact also at regulatory level. The European bodies responsible for regulating chemicals such as fertilizers or detergents, industrial chemicals or pharmaceutical products are seeking an exhaustive evaluation of the toxicity of single substances or mixtures. ALTERNATIVE proposes a new method to make this information available for what concerns cardiotoxicity, allowing to obtain more reliable results with a viable technology which will have a lower impact on the environment and minimize ethical concerns through the reduction of animal testing.
This project has been financed in the framework of the European Green Deal Actions and put together different expertise (in silico systems, machine learning algorithms, toxicology, epidemiology, regulatory affairs) to deliver, in the end, increased awareness of cardiovascular risks related to pollutants (a poorly investigated field so far). A significant support to the regulatory framework for the management of the production and disposal of chemicals and pharmaceuticals is also expected.

Why Is Cloud Integration The Evolution Of Multi-Cloud

When most people talk about multi-cloud as an architectural approach, they usually refer to the usage of more than one cloud provider to run their applications and services. And while using more than one provider is great in some situations by itself, it still lacks the integration between those providers which applications need in order to form a coherent and highly flexible solution. A multi-cloud solution without integration means that software cannot easily communicate, share state, and is not governed by the same policy rules. In this post I will explore the different aspects of cloud integration, what benefits it provides beyond basic multi-cloud and why I think it is the next natural evolution of multi-cloud.

13 clues you are doing DevOps right

Here are 13 best practices which I think are a good indicator for professional DevOps team.

Do you have fully automatic deployments?

Having a 100% automated deployment is an essential part of good DevOps practices. It enables a software team to quickly iterate, deploy often and have a good general trust in the running software. Deployments can be triggered by some event like commit or manually. It is good practice to also have automated rollback procedure, just in case something goes wrong.

Why is application portability difficult and how to prepare for it

What portability means?

Application portability means that an application can be installed, used and supported easily on different host environments without needing to change the code. While portability has different aspects, all of which must be considered, it can be split in two components - the application itself and the environment where the application is running. To achieve portability you need both, an application which is designed to be portable and a new environment which is compatible with the application.

Why is it important to learn GIT at expert level?

Git has become part of the toolbox for every software developer. It’s success is largely due to its power, flexibility, distributed mode of operation and ability to manage extremely complex projects with multiple developers collaborating on the same code-base. However, Git has a steep learning curve which make it hard for many developers to effectively take advantage. Using Git without understanding of its underlying architecture in detail, can be dangerous. Therefore my argument here is that when starting with Git, developers should invest the time to quickly become expert by understanding how Git is designed, implemented and what each of the commands does in the database. Alternatively, knowing just a little bit of Git can be a problem because you use a powerful tool and can cause a lot of problems for you and the rest of the team.

Why Should Companies Develop a Multi-Cloud Strategy?

Digital transformation has been accelerated by the advent of public cloud providers like AWS, GCP and Azure. Companies are leveraging this technology by migrating legacy application from on-premise data centers to public cloud and are developing new software solutions using a cloud-native principles. Next to established cloud architectures like private, public and hybrid-cloud some companies are also looking forward multi-cloud solutions, which is the use of multiple public cloud providers at once. In this post we want to help you decide if and why should your company develop a multi-cloud strategy by looking at the driving factors behind multi-cloud and how this technology can solve problems that the other approaches cannot.
